He said it used to be a fall ritual for a lot of the students coming back to school each year. The alcohol ban, he said, affected traditions of having live DJs at Beer Can Beach — named after the shining beach littered with cans — and a huge turnout of partiers.
Rubio said the change in turnout is a result of most students not knowing about the tradition and because it is more regulated. Waananen said the ban has helped curbed issues such as alcohol overdose on the river and the need for excess law enforcement to keep the area safe.
