They can also shed light on cultural norms and any unspoken rules that exist, which could lead to a much smoother transition into the organization. Those with buddies also reported receiving more active support from both their manager and the broader team. So there you go…you have some numbers to go along with it. Granted, the buddy system is one of the most cost-effective, result-driven approaches you can take to create better organizations.
This is what prompted this post in the first place. The Leader Buddy is a very experienced member of the team who has practiced and experienced handling tough conversations around helping bootcampers live to the Buffer values. The role buddy is someone on the team who understands the role which the bootcamper is joing the team to play. The Culture Buddy is an experienced member ofr the team who has shown that they consistently are able to give great praise and feedback around the culture-fit of new and exisistng team members.
We feel that three buddies is a great way to give bootcampers a variety of interactions within and outside of their core areas. Plus, having more than one gives a variety of perspectives and experiences. Another good thing about having multiple buddies is it takes off that burden in case the buddy and new employee are not a good match.
Find someone else instead to be their buddy. That said, you have to consider a number of factors as well for a right fit. I posted in the HR Open Source Facebook group about how to incentivise employees to be buddies to new employees, and one response I got is that they made it a job requirement at certain levels.
It involves pairing up an existing employee with a new starter to help them find their feet in their new role. Think of it as giving the onboarding process a friendly human face. Think back to your very first day in your job. People are being nice to you, and your new boss is talking about giving you a tour of the building. It feels like there are thousands of new rules to learn, and new routines to adjust to.
This can make the work feel overwhelming — every small mistake can feel like the end of the world. In short, when you feel like an outsider in your new job, it makes adjusting a lot harder. The faster you can find your feet in a new role, the faster you can start bringing your best and finally become the bright and talented individual your employer wanted to hire in the first place.
The buddy system makes it easy for new employees to find their feet, and fast. Think about it — did you have someone looking out for you in your early days? Someone who took it upon themselves to show you the ropes, and to make sure you knew where to find things?
Strong interpersonal relationships make the workplace a better place to work. They can improve productivity , as people tend to learn from each other, and they can make employees feel more fulfilled and motivated in their roles. The buddy system is simply a way of encouraging employees to form these strong relationships. It will bring out the best in the new employee and the buddy alike.
